CHALLENGED SPORTS EXCHANGE DINNER SET FOR MARCH 3
The Challenged Sports Exchange announces its third annual Advocate of the Year Dinner, which will take place Saturday, March 3, in the Burton Student Center at Lynchburg College. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and a program following. Tickets are $55 per seat or $300 per table.
This year’s honorees are the Skinner and Evans families. Previous honorees include The Honorable Shannon Valentine and Merrill Tolbert, Associate Professor in the Human Development & Learning Department at Lynchburg College.
The Challenged Sports Exchange provides 12 months of recreational activities and sports programs for individuals with mental and physical disabilities in the Central Virginia region. Participants include over 300 children to adults with disabilities ranging from mild to severe. Each program is specifically adapted to the participants’ abilities and is only made possible by the availability of volunteers and donations. This non-profit organization has been providing fun for our participants for over 20 years and continues to grow each year.
The Advocate of the Year Dinner gives thanks to outstanding community volunteers that give to our individuals. The event also educates others about our program and serves as a recruitment tool for participants, volunteers and donors. Other than the meal cost, the remaining ticket cost directly funds Challenged Sports Exchange programs.

BLUR SUMMER PROGRAM BLENDS ARTS, TECHNOLOGY FOR TODAY’S YOUNG ARTISTS
The Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists, known as BLUR, is taking applications for its 2012 session, which will be held June 17 through July 8 at Sweet Briar College. BLUR is a co-educational residential summer camp for high school students interested in theater, creative writing and visual art.
BLUR is designed for students to work deeply within their art form while collaborating with artists in other fields—blurring the boundaries between them to imagine new ways of creating art. In addition to BLUR faculty, participants work with practicing artists from co-sponsoring organizations, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and Endstation Theatre Company. Endstation is a professional troupe-in-residence at Sweet Briar, which produces the annual Blue Ridge Summer Theatre Festival while BLUR is in session.
BLUR participants receive two hours of college credit for successfully completing the program. Women attendees who later enroll at Sweet Briar will receive a $2,000 tuition credit. Scholarships and day-student rates are available.
Because the role of technology is also central to the program, several assignments require an Apple iPad. Purchase of the iPad is included in tuition, however students have the option of bringing their own or borrowing one with a refundable deposit to reduce costs.
“Everything we do at BLUR is geared toward this current generation of young artists who are growing up with smartphones, iPads and social media,” Dave Griffith, BLUR founding director and assistant professor of creative writing at Sweet Briar, said. “We want to help them figure out how technology is changing the way art is made and consumed.”

GLOBE MUSEUM TO OPEN IN DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG
The American Globe preservation Society and Omniterrum are pleased to announce the creation of a Globe Museum Downtown Lynchburg. Omniterrum is joining forces to offer a permanent location dedicated to the display and preservation of globes and related planetary from around the world spanning four centuries. The museum will feature a vast variety of globes including terrestrial and celestial globes as well as lunar, Mars and other tellurian orbs. The collection will include models from the 16th century and as current as today.

THE LYNCHBURG HUMANE SOCIETY ACQUIRES FUTURE SITE FOR NEW HUMANE CENTER
The Lynchburg Humane Society (LHS) has purchased 9.6 acres of land just off of Graves Mill Road which will serve as the future site for their state-of-the-art Humane Education and Adoption Center. The site currently features an open pasture, wooded property suitable for walking trails, a red barn and a ranch style home that the LHS hopes to utilize as either a spay/neuter clinic or a humane education center. The LHS is in the early stages of a Capital Campaign, chaired by Rosemary and George Dawson, to raise funds for construction.
“This is a very exciting time for this organization and the City of Lynchburg,” Makena Yarbrough, Executive Director of LHS, said. “Our new Humane Center will be an inviting community center where people can work, adopt, volunteer, learn and where the animals will be cared for in the environment they deserve.”
The LHS recently went through a successful re-zoning campaign on the new property where they received a unanimous city council vote in support of the re-zoning.

NEW NAME FOR CITY DEPARTMENT
The City of Lynchburg’s Department of Utilities has officially changed its name to Department of Water Resources. The change was made for several reasons including the opportunity to have the name fully reflect the range of the department’s services. It is also hoped that the new name will help citizens begin to understand the exceptional resource the City has in its water supply and in the services that are provided.
The Department of Water Resources is responsible for water, wastewater and stormwater services. In December 2011, City Council voted to create a stormwater utility and enterprise fund to handle the ever increasing regulations and associated services.
FRESH AIR FUND SEEKS HOST FAMILIES
The Fresh Air Fund’s Greater Lynchburg area committee is eagerly preparing for summer 2012 and the arrival of New York City children! To ensure that this year’s program is a success, The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking volunteer members and host families so that visiting inner-city children can enjoy new experiences and lasting friendships. Each summer, close to 4,000 New York City children, ages six to 18, enjoy vacations for up to two weeks with volunteer host families in suburban, rural, and small town communities across 13 Northeastern states and Canada. Local Fresh Air Fund volunteers recruit and interview host families, check references and coordinate group program activities in their communities.
In 2012, The Fresh Air Fund will celebrate its 136th summer of bare feet, sandcastles and starry nights for children from New York City’s low-income communities. It only takes one conversation with a Fresh Air child to realize the impact of staying with a volunteer host family. “We were on a walk and I saw a wild snapping turtle! It was so cool because I don’t see many animals in the wild,” remembers eight-year-old Brittney of Queens, NY.
