Publisher’s Letter: May 2010
Issue: May 2010 by Lynchburg Business in From the Publisher, Inside The Magazine
We recently attended a tradeshow here in town that was a veritable melting pot of local businesses. From magazine publishers like us, to fitness gyms and lakefront resorts, the businesses represented were as diverse as the materials they brought to market themselves. The planning efforts each company put into their table or booth was evident and it led us to dig deeper into the importance of planning ahead.
As the old adage goes, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” This proves true not only in our day-to-day personal lives, but our business lives as well. You wouldn’t start a new business without a seamless business plan, so why continue your existing business without one? When outlining the “big picture” of your business, it’s important to assess three things: your competition, your goals and your current situation. Do you want to transform your ice cream shop into a mecca of unimaginable flavors? Or would you like to see your boutique increase in customers but remain in the same location? The possibilities are endless because, well, they’re your dreams.
The key is to have a plan. Whether you’re planning out your employee handbook, determining your Unique Selling Point to attract more business, or developing a comprehensive marketing strategy, plan to have goals in place. It’s the only way to start successfully in order to grow successfully.
Happy planning,
